New Vitamin Boys
Osaka-born photographer Masashi Urashiba went back to Taiwan to photograph the follow-up to his 2014 series “Vitamin Boys.”
Vibrant, colorful and vitalizing like a bottle of vitamin pills – Urashiba’s photographs of men (young and not-so-young) mix sensual, funny and erotic portraits with shots of Taiwan’s urban diverse landscape, sometimes combining both in playful, almost funny ways. Urashiba, who in his 2014 found that the boys in Taiwan “were unexpectedly energetic and not as distressed as I was,” again seems to have found positivity, joy and beauty through his photographs.
“Watching the petals of the flamboyant tree fall in full bloom, I was reminded of when I first started photographing boys 13 years ago.
The boys in Taiwan taught me that everyone lives in different circumstances, each overcoming their own obstacles in their own way with what they have. The ground is dyed scarlet by the fallen petals, and the tree bears large, varied seeds. The shapes of the seeds differ, and the petals float away freely.”
